SEAHAWKS -1 @ EAGLES

If they make another Road Warrior movie, I think they should call it “Road Warrior – When Seahawks Attack”. The Seattle Seahawks were this year’s Road Warriors of the NFL, going a very impressive 7-1 when venturing outside of the Emerald Kingdom. This week, Pete Carroll and his troops are on the road traveling to the city of Brotherly Love where I believe they’ll continue enjoying their road trips and will dispatch the patchwork Eagles in the first round of the playoffs.

The Seahawks were literally one inch away from having the bye this week when tight end Jacob Hollister was stopped at the goal line as time expired in their showdown with the 49ers. It’s been a season of wild finishes for the ‘Hawks as they’ve played a series of games with heart-stopping endings throughout the 2019 season.

One of the games that was not a heart-stopper was the last time the Seahawks traveled to Philly to take on this week’s opponents, the Philadelphia Eagles. The last time these two teams squared off, the Seahawks won 17-9 in a game that was not as close as the score indicates.

In fact, Philly hasn’t done all that well this season when playing teams with winning records, going a sub-mediocre 2-4. The only reason that Philly was able to make the playoffs was that they beat-up on the poor sisters of the NFC East, going 5-1 against the worst division in football and squeaking into the postseason as the only +500 team in the “NFC Least.”

On the opposite side of the equation, the Seahawks played in the toughest division in football. And that experience, along with their love of road trips, makes the Seahawks the birds that will fly into the next round of the playoffs.

PICK: Seahawks -1

VIKINGS @ SAINTS -8

If the over-used, wildly-clichéd expression “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” were true, there would be no team stronger than the New Orleans Saints. The last two years’ playoff losses have been slasher films. “The Minneapolis Miracle” (against this week’s opponents, the Vikings) and “The No Call” against the Rams both had sickly-twisted endings. No one would have blamed the Saints for falling apart, but they didn’t. And you know why? Because this is a mentally-tough, high-character team.

Not only did they survive the horror endings of the last two seasons, but when their Hall of Fame QB and undisputed leader Drew Brees went down mid-season, Teddy Bridgewater stepped in and ran off five straight wins. The team got hot under Teddy, and when Drew came back, they starting blue flaming. They won 7 out of 8 down the stretch. And in the last three games of the season, they rocked their opponents by an average of 23 points. This is a united team on a mission. They are ready to scrub away the stench of the past and have a big f’in parade come February.

Their opponents this weekend, the Minnesota Vikings, are trending in the wrong direction. They played horribly the last 2 weeks of the season, ending the campaign with two losses at home, a place where they had been 6-0 until their ignominious end of the season.

If the Purple People Eaters’ lack of finishing kick this year wasn’t enough of a problem, they have an even bigger problem with their starting QB, Kirk Cousins. He does not play well against good teams. Against bad ones, he’s Tom Brady; against good ones, he’s Greg Brady. Kirk’s record against +500 teams is an abysmal 5-27. And in the playoffs, he’s 0-2, beaten by double digits in both of his postseason appearances.

I’m not a huge fan of giving 8 points in a playoff game. But I think the Dome will be so rocking, it will be worth about 4 ½ points. Drew Brees, Michael Thomas, Cameron Jordan, and Sean Payton should take care of the rest of it.

PICK: SAINTS -8
