COACHES IN THE PRESEASON

Coaches in the Preseason - Baltimore Ravens Training Camp August 20, 2009

Coaches are super important in football – way more important than coaches in other sports, because of the controlled nature of the game and constant shuffling of personnel. And because every football coach is a football coach, they all want to win ALMOST every game. The ALMOST is the NFL Preseason, during which some coaches care a lot more about winning than other coaches do. (There are also some coaches who care a whole more about offense than defense in the pre-season.).

With that in mind, we looked back at the record of current NFL coaches to find an edge for bettors looking to start off the season on a roll.

COACHES WHO CARE

Pete Carroll: The perpetually young and peppy Carroll loves to get his team in the right frame of mind by winning pre-season games. Pete is an amazing 34-14 against the number in the preseason.

John Harbaugh: The Ravens coach has something to crow about with a 27-13 record ATS since he took over as top dog down in the Charm City.

COACHES WHO DON’T CARE

Jason Garrett: Jason’s analytical Ivy League mind long ago decided to ease the ‘Boys into the season. He doesn’t really look at these as preseason games so much as preseason practices. He is abysmal in 10-18 ATS.

FOCUS ON THE O

Bill Belichick: Surprisingly against the grain of his persona, the Hoody likes to let it rip in the preseason. Overs have dominated unders during his tenure, compiling a 57-36 O/U preseason record during his days in Foxboro.

FOCUS ON D

Mike Tomlin: If his D played as well during the postseason as it has during the preseason, MT might have a few more rings: 29 Unders and 17 Overs in the preseason.

Jay Gruden: The sample size isn’t huge, but Unders dwarf Overs at a rate of 12-4 for the Bro of Chucky.
